In a galaxy far, far away...

Welcome to my first blog post!  As you may know, I am an artist who works with oils, watercolours, photography and anything in between.  Purpose of this blog is to introduce pieces that are finished, being worked on, and some techniques that I have come across along the way.  In tribute to the new 3D release of one of my favorite sci-fi movies, the first piece I would like to present is Darth Maul.  This was done in oils for one of my sons birthday (yes, he is a sci-fi fan also) back in 2007.  This painting was done in the Rembrandt fashion of oil painting where you start with a Burnt Sienna solid wash then add a range of values.  To achieve highlights, you remove the wash in those areas with turpentine and wiping it away whereas the rich dark shadows are achieved by a mix of Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue.  Any shade of Black you purchase in a tube, to me, seems to not have the same effect on canvas.  The subtle hints of blue really make it pop.   This piece really taught me the importance of getting the values right.  Color is secondary.  Value has to be first.  This piece took me several hours and readjusting to get the effect I had in my head.  The highest value in the lightsaber was the most difficult for me until a mentor suggested a slight hint of blue in the white could give the right intensity.  In the upcoming weeks, I will be talking some more on some difficulties in producing pieces, not just oils but also in watercolours.  Thank you for stopping by.
